Things to Do on MDI

Most recommended is hiking the mountains or walking or biking the carriage roads of Acadia National Park.

There are also lots of whale watching trips and other boat tours of the local islands, Frenchman's Bay and Somes Sound.

During the summer months, the Park Ranger staff has a full itinerary of guided walks, talks and campfire sing-a-longs for anyone to enjoy.

Gorham Mountain:

Vast panoramic views of the Atlantic unfold below as you ascend this gradual trail to an elevation of 525 feet. 1 mile from the parking area to the summit with moderate inclines.

Ocean Trail:

Sand Beach viewThis trail winds along pink granite cliffs and rocky headlands. Perhaps Acadia's most famous area, you'll stay close to the sea while visiting such natural wonders as Thunder Hole, Monument Cove, and Otter Cliffs. Start from Sand Beach (the water is about 50 degrees in the heat of the summer!). 1 3/4 miles one way and 3 1/2 miles round trip. Easy walking.

Acadia Mountain:

This is a fairly steep trail to one of the park's best vantage points for viewing Somes Sound. You'll also observe several small islands and the open ocean beyond. Acadia Mountain has two summits. Just over 1/2 mile to the west summit and an additional 1/2 mile to the east summit. 45 minutes from start to the east summit. Don't get lost at the beginning, or you might find yourself hanging off a rock face!
